With today’s multiple server platform environments, network configuration can be one of the more difficult challenges. Many network managers are accustomed to certain configurations and do not know the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative. Some typical questions include:
- Should the core network switches be located in any one particular end or in the center of the data center?
- What percentage of the data center should be copper versus fiber?
- Should distribution switches be placed in each cabinet or each row?, and
- Should the switches be installed in the top or the bottom?
There is no one right answer for every organization. The answers to the best network configuration lie in an Infrastructure Concept Plan or ICP. The ICP will help your network team to develop an integrated strategy for your existing or new data center. Consideration too, will be given to the power and cooling systems, as all elements of the data center must coexist in a cohesive fashion. Contact CS/TMI to discuss the advantages of an ICP for your data center. |
